Today was all about the build up to the Olympics opening ceremony. The only sport to speak of was the archery event, which is an unticketed event.
Many took this to mean that anybody was free to turn up at the stadium and watch the first London event of the London Olympic Games, others were scammed by fake tickets.
A London 2012 Spokeswoman confirmed that a “few” people turned up at the stadium with fake tickets, others turned up without any tickets at all.
The archery is traditionally held behind closed doors, but today’s events were apparently thrilling, with South Korean archer Im Dong-hyun claiming a world record in the men’s 70m archery.
He is legally blind in his left eye, and chooses not to wear glasses, instead using the bright colours of the target to distinguish between different point scoring zones.
Of course, the lack of sport taking place today did not mean that there was an Olympic news drought. Politicians and TV presenters did enough to get themselves in the Olympic news sections of many media sites for the wrong reasons.
Kay Burley trended on Twitter due to her role as the presenter for Sky News’ coverage of the build-up to the Olympic opening ceremony. It was faux pas galore for Burley, who reportedly referred to the Olympics as the ‘Main Olympics’ when interviewing a paralympic athlete. You can see the Twitter reaction below:
Elsewhere, Culture and Sport Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, continued his run of fantastic Olympic form when it came to making a bit of a fool of himself. In fairness, he was very graceful about his gaff today.
After the mass national bell ringing which took place at 08:12, Hunt gave a series of interviews to the world’s media. When the cameras were on him he over vigorously rang his bell, the end of which flew off into a crowd of women.
The politician apologised and rescued the situation with a joke about health and safety, unfortunately it didn’t stop the images being beamed around the world though. He continued to take it in good humour when he joked about it on Twitter:
@Jeremy_Hunt: “Oops bell broke taking part in Martin Creed's ringing in of the Games...no one hurt but classic #twentytwelve moment”
Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool, got in on the action too. The following tweet appeared on his profile:
“Dear London, We’re all hoping you don’t f*** it up too.”
It later disappeared and he tweeted:
“Apologies for the previous tweet re: Olympics. The comments were posted in error without the Mayor's authority and don't reflect his views”
The lead up to the opening ceremony was most certainly entertaining, but hopefully not as entertaining as the event will be tonight, when it will be watched by people from all over the world.
