Black couple says white church banned wedding (video)

Friday, July 27, 2012

A Jackson couple said their big wedding plans were dashed by a white church in Crystal Springs because they are black.
The couple wants answers, and the church's pastor is "questioning the mindset of some of his congregation members who caused the problem in the first place," according to WLBT.
The news station reported the couple -- Charles and Te'Andrea WIlson -- had set the date, and printed and mailed invitations, planning to get married at First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs. The couple said they regularly attend the church, but are not members.
The day before the wedding, the couple said they got bad news from the pastor -- they couldn't get married at the church.
"The church congregation had decided no black could be married at that church and that if he went on to marry her, then they would vote him out the church," said Charles Wilson, according to WLBT.
The church pastor -- Dr. Stand Weatherford -- told the news station he was surprised by the reaction of some church members. Yet he performed the ceremony anyway. He just did so at another nearby church -- not First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs.
"I didn't want to have a controversy within the church and I didn't want a controversy to effect the wedding of Charles and Te' Andrea. I wanted to make sure their wedding day was a special day," said Weatherford, according to WLBT.
